Episode 213: The Great Debate

This week, we played some stellar tracks as always, but also had a brief discussion on AI and its place in LAG Radio.

To sum up my thoughts, please see below. Feel free to skip to the playlist if you’re not interested.

In general, I see AI as a tool. When it comes to how it is utilized to generate content, be it written, aural, or otherwise, it should be no more than a tool in the human creative process. When we outsource difficult work, we lose something that is gained by completing deep, challenging, yet satisfying work. This is true for many fields and industries. Sure there are benefits, typically in time saved, but I don’t believe the pros always outweigh the cons.

Regarding how I will be handling AI use in music featured on LAG, I take the following stance: If a song does not contain an AI disclosure, I will assume it was not made using AI. If evidence later comes out that it was indeed generated using AI content, I won’t feature that artist again. If a song DOES contain a disclosure that AI was used in a responsible way, I will still consider it for play on LAG. “Responsible way” to me can be defined as using generative AI to come up with ideas for a song, then restructuring and translating that into real instruments, MIDI, or otherwise, performed/manipulated by a human. It could also be creating a song via those same traditional methods, then using AI to mix/master a track. A song that barely touches human hands is not a song I will consider for this show. Artists that put out an album of music every month (or more) are not the sort of artists that I will feature, as they likely were barely involved in the creative process.

Though it is becoming more difficult to tell what is and is not AI-generated, I will do my best to avoid those who are clearly abusing AI in the creative process. I will also assume innocence until proven guilty.

Stances change, opinions change, and I plan to continue refining my feelings on this as time goes by. But as of this posting, that’s where I lie on AI use in art.

Directly related to that statement, I will NOT be linking to the song by OKISO, who did not disclose AI use and did not provide sufficient evidence to convince the community at large that it was not used. I WILL be linking to the song by 八白 嘘, who disclosed they used AI in a responsible way. See their YT description for a full rundown of how they used it as a tool.

Whew. With that out of the way, as always, thank you for listening this week and I hope you enjoyed!
